I’m a Venezuelan-American ceramic artist living in New York. My ceramic practice focuses on perfecting wheeled sculptural vessels to form modern architectural artifacts.
I grew up in Caracas studying some of Venezuela's greatest ceramic artists, among them Reina Herrera, Cándido Millán, Belén Parada and Josefina Álvarez, who threw on the Ares machines my father, the engineer Ramón Alonso, designed and built.
My vessels are inspired by the shapes of Venezuelan architecture and design, developed during a heavy modernist post-WWII period, which uses its raw forms as frames combined with exuberant tropical vegetation. The wheel, for me, is both a feverish design passion and an addiction.
In my other professional life, I am the CEO of a successful startup, WonderWay.ai, an advanced technological platform for cultural institutions. This follows a successful career as a design executive in interactive technologies in both museums and AI startups and two summa cum laude Master Degrees in Design and Education. I am also a professor of AI & Design at the Tish School of the Arts, Interactive Technology Program (ITP) in New York University (NYU).
