I’m a Venezuelan-American ceramic artist living in New York. My ceramic practice focuses on perfecting wheeled sculptural vessels to form modern architectural artifacts.

I grew up in Caracas studying some of Venezuela's greatest ceramic artists, among them Reina Herrera, Cándido Millán, Belén Parada and Josefina Álvarez, who threw on the Ares machines my father, the engineer Ramón Alonso, designed and built.

My vessels take their shapes from Venezuelan biophilic brutalist architecture developed during a heavy modernist post-WWII period, which uses its raw forms as frames combined with exhuberant tropical vegetation. A severe opening in the concrete holds a view of the forest, and the eye moves between the heavy frame and what it contains: the enormous leaves, the layered green, the colors of the tropics held inside strict forms. That juxtaposition is what I crave, specially in the heavy New York Winters, and what I imbue in my pieces when I combine them with sculptural plants.

In my other professional life, I am the CEO of a successful startup, WonderWay.ai, an advanced technological platform for cultural institutions, following a successful career as a design executive in interactive technologies in both museums and AI startups and two summa cum laude Master Degrees in Design and Education. I am also a professor of AI & Design at the TISH School of the Arts, Interactive Technology Program (ITP) in New York University (NYU).
